Annual Board of Governors Meeting
Dobriansky, Engel Join Community Representatives

NCSJ held its annual Board of Governors Meeting today in Washington, DC. The Honorable Paula J. Dobriansky, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, delivered the keynote address on U.S. policy in the former Soviet Union and around the world. Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY) discussed his recent trip to Ukraine and Belarus, where he participated in ceremonies for the 60th anniversary of Babi Yar and met with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. He stressed that “there is great work to be done” in these countries and in strengthening the Jewish communities of the Soviet successor states.

The meeting was chaired by NCSJ Chairman Harold Paul Luks of Washington, DC, and NCSJ President Robert J. Meth of Los Angeles, with participation from representatives from numerous local and national Jewish organizations. The ambassadors of the Russian Federation, Armenia, Belarus, Costa Rica and the Kyrgyz Republic also attended the meeting, along with diplomats from other countries including Latvia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.

Robert Zwang, Executive Director of the Federation - Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut, Inc., and Michael Steiner, Director of Donor Development for the United Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, also reported on their communities’ active partnerships with Jewish communities in Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, and other countries.
